Miles of beautiful beaches, dolphins frolicking in the channel, gentle gulf breezes and perfect weather all add up to the allure of our island. More than 500 species of birds visit us annually, making Port Aransas one of the most popular birding destinations on the continent. North Deer Island supports one of the most significant colonial waterbird rookeries along the upper Texas coast. Visitors can enjoy paddleboats, non-motorized boating, swimming, cycling, hiking, archeology activities, historical re-enactments, rock climbing, birding and camping on Galveston Island State Park. About 2,000 acres of green space, complete with beachside and bayside camping await visitors. While there are too many outstanding wildlife sites to describe, sites are in close proximity to the Galveston Island Visitors Center . Residents can join visitors from all 50 states and foreign countries enjoying the diverse wildlife in the Galveston Bay watershed. Beaches were improved, with the state developing a strip through the middle of Galveston Island as a state recreation beach.
