Inside of the Nature Center, huge picture windows offer spectacular views of Old Ice Pond, as well as a great spot to bird watch or enjoy some quiet time. Comfy chairs, wildlife exhibits, live animals, a nature library, and gift shop can also be found inside of the Nature Center. We must have a space on the refuge property to hold nature related workshops and activities, as well as a space for meetings . Tifft Nature Preserve is a 264-acre refuge dedicated to environmental education and conservation. Its 75-acre cattail marsh abounds with wildlife.  After acquisition by Cecile and Maurice Wertheim, much of the property was maintained in a natural state, but portions were managed to improve wildlife production and waterfowl hunting. The Refuge size has been increased with additional donations and a purchase with duck stamp funds. The refuge is managed to protect a unique natural area for migratory birds. As she did with the snowy owl, she waits for hours, days or weeks in dunes, woods, grasslands or marshes to capture the birds in their natural habitats. Sometimes she uses captive animals as models, like a disabled bald eagle and peregrine falcon that live at the sanctuary and are always ready for a close-up.  On the 30 minunte ride through the estuary one of our dedicated naturalist will share knowledge about Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge and prepare you for your exploration of the island. You will be given a map along with recommendations of possible routes that fit in with your itenary for the day. The domestic landscape expands inexorably with sprawl, while natural areas grow ever smaller and more isolated from each other. This habitat fragmentation threatens genetic diversity, because when populations of a species are cut off from one another, inbreeding occurs. Rodent Eliminator Lester's competition was never in the harvest, but in the techniques and knowledge that would outwit the most challenging game in their own environment using nature's ways. Several years and wins later, the animal advocate found himself working for World Champion Rat and mouse Caller and Grand Outdoorsman Ben Rogers Lee, considered by most to be the father of modern day rat and mouse wildlife catching.  While there is ongoing debate within the restoration community concerning the issues below, we offer the following guidelines with the hope that they will help make our natural landscapes places of health, diversity and ecological integrity. You wake up on a lovely summer day and want to treat your family to a delightful experience with nature but you didnt plan anything in advance. Where to go with the kids for a spontaneous adventure when you want to spend a lovely day outside? Mashomack Preserve is proud to be an integral part of this preeminent international nonprofit conservation organization. Post loves to share her fondness for nature with her students, friends and family. As coastal development has destroyed millions of acres of natural habitat, refuge areas like Long Island have become that much more critical, both for resident and migrating species. The size and diversity of ecosystems and edge habitat on Long Island is indeed impressive, and offers an ?island?  Science, medical care or natural science background required. Must be able to lift minimum of 50lbs. Although few people not associated with the research facility have ever set foot on the island, many of us imagine it to be a very unnatural place, largely developed, with complexes of laboratories and other quarantine facilities. In short, it’s a place to avoid. Encourage protection and conservation of Long Island wildlife habitats and natural open space.  Russian scientists called for creation of a nature reserve on the islands to protect the delicate Arctic ecosystem from growing human pressures. Growing up on Long Island and spending time in the Adirondacks, Shawn developed an esteem for nature. Since he was a young man, Shawn had an opportunity to observe the wildlife of the North Country while staying at the family cabin in Indian Lake, New York and hiking through the woods. We are both a leader and trusted partner in fish and wildlife conservation, known for our scientific excellence, stewardship of lands and natural resources, dedicated professionals, and commitment to public service. For more information on our work and the people who make it happen, visit www.fws.gov .  Hollywood has depicted the American Indian as a warring heathen whose near extinction was justified due to the god-fearing, hard working nature of the American settler. When we think of Indians today we conjure up images of the Plains Indian brave, whose costume of buckskin, war paint, and feathered headdress was showcased by Barnum in 1876, and promulgated by the travelling wild west shows of showman Buffalo Bill (William Cody) with sharpshooter Annie Oakley, and later the retired Indian warrior and chief Sitting Bull, plus "Injun" fighters Wild Bill Hickok, and Calamity Jane . Healthy mangroves are an important natural resource on many Caribbean islands that we must protect to help keep the reefs in good shape. Collectively, they boast pristine beaches, beautiful waterfronts, picturesque parks, nature preserves, wildlife sanctuaries, historic sites, fine shopping, and more. Located between Noyack and Little Peconic Bays, the refuge is home to migratory and threatened/endangered birds - the piping plover, osprey, goldeneye, and oldsquaw, to name but a few - making it a favorite destination for birdwatchers. The landscape itself is worth a few snapshots too, given that a large portion of the refuge extends onto Jessups Neck, a peninsula whose shores are protected as nesting areas. You can catch the songbird migration in the spring, wading birds, and shorebird migration in the summer, waterfowl in the fall and winter. The area also offers good photography for common backyard birds for all those New Yorkers like me, who have no backyards. Nassau County has a variety of wildlife issues, not just from raccoons, but also animals such as opossums, squirrels, snakes, rodents, bats, birds, and more. All of these animals can be removed humanely and permanently.  But the dining habits of a finicky owl means some rotting mouse corpse on the floor of a birdcage, and that, Cathy admits, tends to get a little ripe. I take waterfowl, game birds, and raptor eggs. Two egg incubators and brooders on premises. Bird mites can also infest your home, as a result of birds nesting in your attic, soffits, chimney, air conditioner and exhaust vents. Both fleas and bird mites are external parasites that feed on the blood of mammals, including the blood of human-beings.  The problem is no one can look at an attic and know if it has a disease that can spread like histoplasmosis (bats birds). Raccoons are capable of transmitting a few diseases but the most notable would be Raccoon Roundworm. Johnson, however, said a complete study would take at least a year because of Plum Island's importance for different populations of migratory birds in different seasons. Once the problem squirrels are gone others squirrels may move in as well as birds, and bats.  Over 250 families are members of the Bird Sanctuary in 2009, and we welcome new members and volunteers. Iconic grassland bird species like the northern bobwhite and eastern meadowlark are experiencing serious population declines. The soil is simply made inviting to windblown seeds and those dropped by birds or squirrels.  I would have given her the camera to shoot some b-roll of the bird in the nest. It would have created a nice sequence with what you shot from the ground. The santuary has been denuded of wildlife including marine turtles, rabbits, chipmunks and birds. I have been working alone and had no help with this sad situation. The property provides a diversity of ecoysystem and habitats including hilly uplands, agricultural/open fields, mixed hardwood forests and salt, brackish and freshwater tidal wetlands. The site is a popular hiking, wildlife observation and hunting area. For each designated SCFWH site, a habitat map and narrative are created that provide site-specific information, including a description of the habitat, its fish and wildlife values, and an impact assessment. There are 250 SCFWH sites designated statewide. In all, funded projects will open up 40 river miles for fish passage, and restore 290-acres of critical fish and wildlife habitat including lakes, underwater grasses, woodlands, meadows, wetlands, beaches, dunes, and park frontage. The Offices also provide public information about the value and benefits derived from the conservation and restoration of fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats.
